Mary Jo’s Weight Loss Journey…
My painful struggle with weight began as a young child. I went on my first diet when I was 9 years old. I still remember it like it was yesterday. It was called the “US Ski Team Diet,” I lost 9lbs, and was ecstatic!
Unfortunately, this marked the beginning of my 30+ years of yo-yo dieting…most of which were met with minimal success.
Coincidentally, I began working at the age of 9 and it became apparent very quickly that I was “really good at work.” This eventually led to me becoming a workaholic, working 12-16 hours per day, 6 days per week.
As my career became overwhelmingly important, my health deteriorated dramatically along with a steady increase in my weight. My family history is riddled with serious health issues which I, too, began to experience: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, severe sleep apnea and pre-diabetic.
In 2009, I hit rock bottom. I wanted to regain my health, but most of all I wanted to just “LIVE!” At that point, I decided that with my long history of failure on traditional diets, surgery really could be the only option for me. I was desperate for my weight loss struggle to “end” and at the time it felt like the only way out.
Fortunately for me, my very wise and trusted internist felt surgery wasn’t the best fit for me and refused to support my decision. She strongly encouraged me to give one more program a try. Needless to say, I was disappointed that surgery was off the table and went to the recommended program kicking and screaming. I now, fondly refers to this time in my life as my “mid-life awakening!”
Although the challenge was daunting and emotional, I knew I had to start by taking it one step at a time, beginning with food. I had to do it differently this time….their way…not my way.
The program I joined focused on stabilizing blood sugar levels by eating wholesome and healthy foods and also included a one-on-one coaching component. A simple food program and the support of my amazing coach forever changed my life, both personally and professionally. I lost 70 pounds and got off all medication. I even became the CEO of that weight loss company.
My second step was to incorporate exercise in to my life.
My entire life I labeled myself as a “non-exerciser.” That was until I found an activity I absolutely loved…Jazzercise. Not only did it help me regain my health, it aided in transforming my body. Needless to say, I was filled with gratitude and wanted to give back to others who were experiencing the same struggles as I had.
I felt that if I could help even just one person regain their health, then my lifelong struggle was worth it.
Fast forward to today…I am now a Health Coach, Weight Loss Specialist and Fitness Instructor who loves to encourage others to achieve their health goals and lead by example proving that it’s never too late to change your life or to help and encourage others to change theirs.
